Garage Plans: How to Find the Best Set for Your Garage

When considering which set of garage plans to use, there are several essential steps you must take before you even buy your set of plans or begin construction on your garage.

1. Before purchasing a set of garage plans, you’ll need to contact the zoning office of your municipality to make sure that your garage will conform to local requirements. If your home is part of a home owners’ association, then you will also need to check with the HOA to make sure that the garage you want to build is permissible.

2. Think about precisely what kind of storage you will need. How many cars do you want to fit in your garage? Do you want storage shelving? How about a laundry area or a workbench for your home building projects? Consider all of the things you want to use your garage for before you settle on a set of plans.

3. Choose the appropriate design. Consider what type of siding material you will use. Garage sidings include wood, vinyl, and aluminum. In most cases, you will want to choose a look that matches the look of your home. Also consider the type of garage door you will need to complete the look and function of your garage.

4. Mark off the space that your garage will sit on. It is essential to make sure that you have enough space to accommodate the garage building plan that you choose. Make sure that the property that you want to build on is your own property, as you won’t want your neighbor coming to you halfway through the building process and pointing out that part of your garage is sitting on his property.

With these considerations taken care of, you will be ready to choose your optimal set of garage plans, which you can either use to build on your own, or to eliminate an expensive step in the process and save hundreds of dollars by furnishing your plans yourself to your contractors or subcontractors.

Small Garage Plans for a Successful Project

Building a small garage is a project that is not beyond the scope of an ambitious DIYer. However, building a garage, even a small one, is a pretty big project, so here are a few tips to help you get started.

Before you break out the power tools, take some time to evaluate your needs, the space you have available for building, and your budget for the project. A good set of small garage plans will help you figure out the materials you’ll need as well as the overall cost of the project.

Next, mark off the area where you plant to build. Make sure that the garage boundaries fall within your own property line. You’ll need to consider material aspects like the exterior siding you’ll use (vinyl, wood, etc.). In most cases you’ll want to match the color and siding to that of your house.

Be sure to check with your area’s municipality so that you have a clear handle on local building codes and any building permits that may be necessary.

Also consider the interior layout of your small garage. Plan out the lighting, electrical outlets, storage shelving, laundry space, workbench area, etc.

You’ll also want to choose your garage door, taking care to measure the door opening precisely. If you live in a cold climate, you may want to consider a door that is well-insulated.

A good set of small garage plans will help you form a clear picture of your garage in your mind as well as on paper and ensure that you get your garage building project off to the right start and avoid mistakes, which will save you considerable time and money in the long run.

Once you have a good set of plans, your building permits, a detailed material list, and your actual materials, you’ll be ready to begin construction of your garage.

Simple Carport Plans

You may live on a small plot of land that simply do not allow for the space necessary to build a garage. The next best option to building a garage may be to build a carport. A carport is especially desirable if you live in a climate that can subject your parked car to the elements like rain and snow.
A carport is also desirable if your driveway is lined with trees, as a protective shield for falling leaves and branches. The good news is that a carport is not too difficult to build on your own with a set of simple carport plans.
If you’re ambitious, you may be tempted to draw up your own set of carport plans. However, you may actually save time and money in the long run by buying a set of plans because even though a carport appears simple enough, the design can be more complex than you think, and you also want to make sure that it meets current building codes.
You’ll also want to make sure that you buy the right materials in the right quantities, which means you’ll need an accurate material list.  This will ensure that you budget your project appropriately avoid delays because you didn’t buy enough wood at the outset.
Carports have to stand up to heavy wind loads as well because many do not have walls to screen the wind. The roof
acts just like an airplane wing so it has to be designed in a way that keeps it firmly anchored to the ground or it
may set sail if you are prone to storms or heavy winds.
Also, if you live in an area where there is a lot of snowfall the structure could collapse under the heavy weight of snow if it is not built with this in mind.  All in all, it is a good idea to buy a set of plans even
though your carport may seem on the surface like a simple project because it is anything but.
