Make sure that the property that you want to build on is your own property, as you won’t want your neighbor coming to you halfway through the building process and pointing out that part of your garage is sitting on his property.

Before you break out the power tools, take some time to evaluate your needs, the space you have available for building, and your budget for the project. A good set of small garage plans will help you figure out the materials you’ll need as well as the overall cost of the project.

Next, mark off the area where you plant to build. Make sure that the garage boundaries fall within your own property line. You’ll need to consider material aspects like the exterior siding you’ll use (vinyl, wood, etc.). In most cases you’ll want to match the color and siding to that of your house.

If you are thinking about building your own shed, there are a few things you need to consider.  I can speak from experience here because when I tried to build my first shed a few years ago, I did so without a set of plans, a material list or even an idea of what the final structure would look like.  This lack of foresight and planning ended up costing me a lot of time and money as a result of endless trial and many wasted weekends because I was trying to design on the fly.

Having learned from my experience, my next shed project was different.  The first had to be torn down because I did not get a building permit nor did I get permission from the home owner’s association and it did not conform to their guidelines.

One of the first things I learned was to check local building codes, and if you belong to any type of home owner’s association, make sure to get their approval as well.  In order to do these two things you need a set of plans. I can tell you that that the time and trouble saved by just purchasing a good set of plans versus creating your own is well worth it.

Make sure your blueprints come with a complete material list as well as a cut chart showing you what size to cut your wood.  This is very useful because then you can just buy your material and cut it all to size before you ever hammer in your first nail.  This is not something you can do when you do not have a professional set of construction plans.

The next important thing to consider is the location of the shed and exactly what you will be using it for.  Will it require an electrical power source as well?  It is a good idea to design your shed to match the design of your house, as this will help boost your property value.

You may live on a small plot of land that simply does not allow for the space necessary to build a garage. The next best option to building a garage may be to build a carport. A carport is especially desirable if you live in a climate that can subject your parked car to the elements like rain and snow.

A carport is also desirable if your driveway is lined with trees, as it will serve as a protective shield for falling leaves and branches. The good news is that a carport is not too difficult to build on your own with a set of simple carport plans.

If you’re ambitious, you may be tempted to draw up your own set of carport plans. However, you may actually save time and money in the long run by buying a set of plans because even though a carport appears simple enough, the design can be more complex than you think, and you also want to make sure that it meets current building codes.

You’ll also want to make sure that you buy the right materials in the right quantities, which means you’ll need an accurate material list.  This will ensure that you budget your project appropriately avoid delays because you didn’t buy enough wood and materials at the outset.

In this article, I’m going to give you some great ideas on how to save big by using your own provided set of garage building plans for your garage building project.

Building your own garage is beyond the skill set of most homeowners.  If you have the ambition and skills, however, you may wish to tackle this project on your own, or you may simply hire the job out to a local contractor.  Whatever you decide, one great idea is to get a good set of garage building plans, which will enable you to either use them to build the garage yourself or save a fortune paying your contractor or an architect to design the structure.

With today’s tough economy there are all kinds of out of work contractors, framers and construction workers that will take just about any job they can get their hands on.  If you have a set of plans that comes with a material list, you can go to a lumber yard and get a bid on the materials.

Once you’ve gotten your bid, you then tell the contractors who are submitting proposals for the job that you will be supplying the materials and sets of plans.  During the housing boom, many contractors would have passed on the job because they would not have been able to mark the materials up, but as I mentioned, in today’s economy everyone is playing by a different set of rules and you can save a fortune in construction cost if you know how.

Also keep in mind that you can do other aspects of the construction as well like painting or wiring the garage or perhaps even installing the garage door. At the very minimum, the you may be able to save by doing small tasks like installing a garage door opener yourself.  All of these little things add up and your contractor usually has to hire outside subcontractors for each phase of construction.

Traditionally, each subcontractor  gives the contractor his price and then the contractor adds a bit more to it before passing on the final proposal to you.  Cutting out just a couple of these subcontractors and doing the work yourself can save you hundreds of dollars!  Again though, it all starts with a detailed set of plans so you know what it is and what you cannot take on yourself.
