Best Garage Plans

You may live on a small plot of land that simply does not allow for the space necessary to build a garage. The next best option to building a garage may be to build a carport. A carport is especially desirable if you live in a climate that can subject your parked car to the elements like rain and snow.

A carport is also desirable if your driveway is lined with trees, as it will serve as a protective shield for falling leaves and branches. The good news is that a carport is not too difficult to build on your own with a set of simple carport plans.

If you’re ambitious, you may be tempted to draw up your own set of carport plans. However, you may actually save time and money in the long run by buying a set of plans because even though a carport appears simple enough, the design can be more complex than you think, and you also want to make sure that it meets current building codes.

You’ll also want to make sure that you buy the right materials in the right quantities, which means you’ll need an accurate material list.  This will ensure that you budget your project appropriately avoid delays because you didn’t buy enough wood and materials at the outset.

Carports have to stand up to heavy wind loads as well because many do not have walls to screen the wind. The roof acts just like an airplane wing so it has to be designed in a way that keeps it firmly anchored to the ground or it may set sail if you are prone to storms or heavy winds.

Also, if you live in an area where there is a lot of snowfall the structure could collapse under the heavy weight of snow if it is not built with this in mind.  All in all, it is a good idea to buy a set of plans even though your carport may seem on the surface like a simple project because most often you’ll find that it is anything but.

In this article, I’m going to give you some great ideas on how to save big by using your own provided set of garage building plans for your garage building project.

Building your own garage is beyond the skill set of most homeowners.  If you have the ambition and skills, however, you may wish to tackle this project on your own, or you may simply hire the job out to a local contractor.  Whatever you decide, one great idea is to get a good set of garage building plans, which will enable you to either use them to build the garage yourself or save a fortune paying your contractor or an architect to design the structure.

With today’s tough economy there are all kinds of out of work contractors, framers and construction workers that will take just about any job they can get their hands on.  If you have a set of plans that comes with a material list, you can go to a lumber yard and get a bid on the materials.

Once you’ve gotten your bid, you then tell the contractors who are submitting proposals for the job that you will be supplying the materials and sets of plans.  During the housing boom, many contractors would have passed on the job because they would not have been able to mark the materials up, but as I mentioned, in today’s economy everyone is playing by a different set of rules and you can save a fortune in construction cost if you know how.

Also keep in mind that you can do other aspects of the construction as well like painting or wiring the garage or perhaps even installing the garage door. At the very minimum, the you may be able to save by doing small tasks like installing a garage door opener yourself.  All of these little things add up and your contractor usually has to hire outside subcontractors for each phase of construction.

Traditionally, each subcontractor  gives the contractor his price and then the contractor adds a bit more to it before passing on the final proposal to you.  Cutting out just a couple of these subcontractors and doing the work yourself can save you hundreds of dollars!  Again though, it all starts with a detailed set of plans so you know what it is and what you cannot take on yourself.
